“Imaging services are “the eyes” into the body that provide diagnostic information to doctors. I work at a busy urgent care clinic and constantly feel rushed because more patients are always waiting. I wish the ones making staffing decisions could see the look on patients’ faces who are turned away because we are at capacity and told to go to the ER or come back in the morning. It is awful. We have fewer staff, more patients, and no appointments. Some locations are over 70 days out for ultrasound in our region. Our patients deserve better."Melissa Bruggeman, Radiologic Technologist at Kaiser Skyline medical offices in the Northwest, UFCW Local 555 Hawaii Nurses Association/OPEIU Local 50 SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West SEIU Local 105 SEIU Local 121RN SEIU Local 49 SEIU Healthcare 1199NW OPEIU Local 2 OPEIU Local 8 OPEIU Local 29- Legacy 3 OPEIU Local 30 Engineers & Scientists of California Local 20, IFPTE AFL & CIO Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions ... Who else is having trouble staffing back up since the pandemic? "I was worried about bringing COVID home to my family during the pandemic. We all were. Many of my coworkers in Environmental Services just left. Day after day, we were so short staffed that we worked double shifts so the hospital could stay open. I did this for two years straight. Now that COVID is more under control, not much has changed. We cannot get back to full staffing levels because Kaiser cannot compete with the signing bonuses and higher pay that other hospitals offer. If something does not change soon, patients will get sicker and choose to go elsewhere. No one wants to come to a dirty hospital."Ghenet Berhane, Lead Environmental Services Custodian at Capitol Hill Medical Center in Washington, SEIU Healthcare 1199NW #coalitionstrong #ckpu #frontlineworkerscareHawaii Nurses Association/OPEIU Local 50 SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West SEIU Local 105 SEIU Local 121RN SEIU Local 49 OPEIU Local 2 OPEIU Local 8 OPEIU Local 29- Legacy 3 OPEIU Local 30 UFCW Local 555 Engineers & Scientists of California Local 20, IFPTE AFL & CIO ... "Some people wait for an hour just to talk to me, a Patient Access Representative, only to hear that they will not be able to see their doctor for another month. It breaks my heart. The worst was telling that to a recently diagnosed cancer patient who needed her kidney removed. Can you imagine? Kaiser execs need to think like patients, not just business people."Lynda Bates, Patient Access Representative at the Primary Care Appointing Center in Spokane, Washington, OPEIU Local 8Every story helps us fight for a better workplace and improve patient care.
