"These days everyone is running just to do the basics for their patients. As a Hospital Unit Secretary, I am in the middle of it all, taking phone calls from patients and trying to get them the help they need. Unfortunately, it has become the norm that they have to wait, sometimes 30 minutes, because there are simply not enough staff on the floors. If you have to go to the bathroom or are in pain, waiting even 5 minutes feels too long. It didn’t used to be this way, and it shouldn’t be now."Jeannie Shim, Hospital Unit Service Coordinator in Southern California, OPEIU Local 30 #coalitionstrong #ckpu #frontlineworkerscareHawaii Nurses Association/OPEIU Local 50SEIU-United Healthcare Workers WestSEIU Local 105SEIU Local 121RNSEIU Local 49SEIU Healthcare 1199NWOPEIU Local 2OPEIU Local 8OPEIU Local 29- Legacy 3UFCW Local 555Engineers & Scientists of California Local 20, IFPTE AFL & CIO ... A champion of the civil rights and labor movements, Martin Luther King Jr.’s leadership and activism in the mid-sixties, still resonates in the labor movement 52 years after his assassination. In the days prior to his murder, Dr. King spoke with members of AFSCME Local 1733 and encouraged them to keep fighting unfair policies that were keeping their work unsafe and underpaid. His tireless fight for racial and economic justice is a reminder that we have come so far, but there’s still work to be done. He believed that the structure of unions, their commitment to equal and fair pay and their calls for safe work conditions were a key component to an equitable society. He also called on worker organizations to do better, and denounce discrimination within its ranks, and become a political force against those who seek to weaponize exploitation and threaten our right to be able to earn a sustainable, fair, and honest living. When you speak of Dr. King and his legacy, remember that he spoke often of collective voice, collective action, and collective power. “Imaging services are “the eyes” into the bo “Imaging services are “the eyes” into the body that provide diagnostic information to doctors. I work at a busy urgent care clinic and constantly feel rushed because more patients are always waiting. I wish the ones making staffing decisions could see the look on patients’ faces who are turned away because we are at capacity and told to go to the ER or come back in the morning. It is awful. We have fewer staff, more patients, and no appointments. Some locations are over 70 days out for ultrasound in our region. Our patients deserve better."

Who else is having trouble staffing back up since Who else is having trouble staffing back up since the pandemic?

"I was worried about bringing COVID home to my family during the pandemic. We all were. Many of my coworkers in Environmental Services just left. Day after day, we were so short staffed that we worked double shifts so the hospital could stay open. I did this for two years straight. Now that COVID is more under control, not much has changed. We cannot get back to full staffing levels because Kaiser cannot compete with the signing bonuses and higher pay that other hospitals offer. If something does not change soon, patients will get sicker and choose to go elsewhere. No one wants to come to a dirty hospital."

It breaks my heart. The worst was telling that to a recently diagnosed cancer patient who needed her kidney removed. Can you imagine? Working at Kaiser Permanente has become frustrating and scary as the focus is now on metrics and how fast we can push out prescriptions, not safety. Patients are rushed through even when they have questions for the pharmacist. The phone rings off the hook because no one has time to answer it. Taking time off or calling out is impossible because there is no backup. It is exhausting, and morale is low. These last two years have felt like 20. This is not good for anyone; we need more staffing."

Many KP departments saw staff cuts during the pandemic; now, patient volumes are rising. "In 22 years at KP, I have been through other emergencies. The response was not to staff down; we staffed up. This time should be no different."
